Having lived in many parts of the country, archery has always been a part of his life and he has been lucky to have found many archery clubs to shoot with, as well as having helped to start several clubs over the years. In 1998, together with other like-minded archers, Jim was instrumental in the foundation of Riverside Archers, and has been with the club ever since, from its first location to its present facilities at Ryton-on-Tyne Comprehensive School
.
Jim’s interest in archery has stretched to experimenting with making several of his own bows. In fact in his early days he manufactured a very powerful 400lb !!! crossbow with parts salvaged from boats and cars, and has also made his own takedown bows and has shot these with great success.
Our club members were in a celebratory mood again recently, as there was a special presentation to our club president and chairman Jim Maughan, in recognition of his 60 years of service to archery. A special GNAS certificate was presented by our club secretary Karen Mcmillan on behalf of the Northern Counties Archery Association.
Jim, now 84, took up archery in 1948, when he attended an archery course at Houghall College, Durham. He went on to do a coaching course and soon became coach to many groups including the YWCA and to a disabled archery club who he took to several national events at Stoke Mandeville.
