Well here we are near the end of the indoor season and there is so much to catch up on, it’s hard to know where to start.
Firstly we would like to welcome to the club the 9 new members from the last two beginners’ courses, we hope they settle in to the club and are looking forward to the forthcoming outdoor season.
One of our junior members, Kimberly Collin, continues to shoot really well. After achieving her Junior Bowman classification on the last outdoor shoot of 2009, she has won the Junior Ladies under 15’s at the Green Lane Brays in November, the Ponteland Vegas in January and the DNAA Indoor Championships in March.
The introduction of a monthly senior trophy has been a bit of a hit giving us something to aim for during the winter months. It was won two months running by Kath Samways. Ann Conifey managed to come out on top for the combined months of Dec and Jan and Chris Mernin beat Alison Williams by 1 point to win in February, which was a bit of a pick-me-up for her as she had a bad tumble at home and ended up on crutches for a few days.
The Christmas shoot on the 20th of December was a great fun-filled afternoon, as always. The climax of the day was Shooting the Wand, which saw one of our juniors members, Lizzie Gray, holding her own against the more experienced and much more senior Ed Brown (sorry Ed) in a thrilling ‘head to head’ over several rounds. Ed finally achieved the win by a fraction of an inch.
At the end of the afternoon, awards were given to Ian Norwood - The Manning Trophy for, Archer of the Year, Jack Steel - Best Handpainted target, Ann Conifey - Best seasonal hat and of course the team and individual winners of the afternoon’s shooting received their delicious chocolate Santas.
The GNAS Handicap Improvement Medal for 2009 was awarded to Simon Bain for an excellent reduction in his outdoor handicap of 15.
On the 21st of February there was a bit of excitement when Kevin Steel ‘Robin Hooded’ two of his arrows. In fact the second arrow completely destroyed the first before falling to the floor (we had to place it back into the broken arrow just for the photos), which in a way was quite lucky for him as it appeared to remain serviceable (maybe just as a spare).
We are sure everyone will agree that it has been a long hard winter and whilst we enjoy shooting indoors, as Easter approaches everyone becomes a little impatient to move outside, looking forward to shooting on those (hopefully) warm spring and summer days.
